Home Birth On Your Own Terms – Heather Baker – Review

Heather Baker’s book is an absolutely incredible collection of all the “need to know” things that you’re scared relatives will ask you, “have you thought about this, how have you prepared”?

She has an incredible facebook page Freebirth/Unassisted Childbirth with thousands of women actively sharing birth stories and mutual support through dozens of questions that get asked and answered there. Heather is also fairly active on the board and it’s not uncommon for her to also answer questions.

I bought it after taking the FreebirthSociety’s eCourse and wanted more specific details about postpartum hemorrhage and essential oils for labour. (She details these beautifully, along with herbs, homeopathics and essential oils for many labour/pregnancy concerns.)

It is a relatively quick read at 317 kindle pages that cover everything you could think of from essential oils to postpartum hemorrhage, worst case scenarios and holistic solutions.

Heather covers all of the things that you didn’t know you needed to know and didn’t think to prepare for.

By covering all of these things, she very safely and beautifully prepares women to birth on their own terms.

Her book is definitely aimed at women who are looking to home birth but doesn’t judge if you are choosing a practitioner to support you.

Regardless of whether that’s with birth support practitioner or not, this book is a fabulous resource for anyone who’s looking to calm their logical mind and create a to do list of things to purchase and prepare in order to feel absolutely prepared for their free birth experience.

The best thing about this book: It’s logical, straightforward, searchable (if you get the kindle) and a fabulous resource for husbands who want a short overview of what to expect.

Still here? Maybe you need some background on why I'm sharing this...

As a single parent for many years, I know what it's like to live in daily overwhelm that seems it will never end.

After suffering from severe post-partum depression for 7 years, and an abusive relationship that I couldn't seem to quit, I developed a case of seriously self destructive self talk about being a "horrible mother". I knew I needed to do something different, but couldn't seem to shake old patterns.

I took every personal development class that came my way for 3 years straight.  3 day weekend intensives 3x month. After a while started to experiment with the few things that HAD been working to bring me more peace, and combined them into one power packed (and quick) experience, to help find that inner peace, and make progress towards my goal of ACTUALLY feeling good.

I built the first brain training track after listening to a John Asaraf course.  Things started changing for me in a big way and with these tracks I've been able to stop experiencing irrational anger towards my first child (who I had medical birth bonding trauma).  I'm no longer experiencing mental health challenges, attracted a wonderful man into my life who is a great father to her son so much more I dreamed of.

Now I spend my days writing, baby tending and helping other mothers  manage and reduce their stress, build healthier relationships, stop sounding like their mothers, and live lives they once only dreamed of.

I put the best, worst and naughtiest of it into this epic 444 page memoir to help myself and you recover from the culturally normalized rape that is all to rampant in the world right now.
